Cross-term Registration Policies

The Law School operates on a semester calendar while most of the university operates on a quarter calendar.  We have clearly outlined below the rules governing cross-registration in each term.  Please note that while there are certain elements that specifically apply to the JDMBA program, the overarching cross-term rules apply to all law students.  Exceptions are not available.

  • Summer Quarter
    • Law students may enroll in Law Summer Term classes, but may not enroll in Summer Quarter, except first year JDMBA students (1Js), who must enroll in Kellogg’s Summer Quarter for program requirements.
    • Rising 3Js (third year JDMBA students) may enroll in Law Summer Term classes that begin after the Spring Quarter ends.  They may not take Kellogg Summer Quarter classes.
  • Fall Quarter + Fall Semester
    • Law students may enroll in both Fall Quarter and Fall Semester classes, except first year JDs (1Ls) and 1Js (Law Semester only) and 2Js (second year JDMBA students, who may enroll in Kellogg Quarter only).
  • Winter Intersession + Winter Quarter
    • Law students may enroll in either Law’s Intersession or in the Winter Quarter, but not both.  As the San Francisco Immersion Program (SFIP) begins on the quarter, the SFIP participants will not be able to register for Intersession classes.  Students will be on their honor to abide by this restriction; students found in violation will be removed from the quarter.
    • 1Ls and 1Js are not eligible for Winter courses.
  • Winter Quarter + Spring Semester
    • Law students may enroll in both Winter Quarter and Spring Semester, except 1Ls and 1Js (Law Semester only) and 2Js (Kellogg Quarter only).  Students will be on their honor to abide by the cap and to not enroll in time conflicted courses; students found in violation will be removed from the quarter as the semester is required for Law’s residency requirement.
  • Spring Quarter
    • Law students may not enroll in Spring Quarter, except 2Js (Kellogg Quarter only).
