Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering MS

Degree Requirements

The following requirements are in addition to, or further elaborate upon, those requirements outlined in The Graduate School Policy Guide.

Master's

Total Units Required: 12

This non-thesis MS program is designed to be completed in three quarters:

  • Eight units of 400-level courses
    • Four Mechanical Engineering
    • Four Materials Science & Engineering
    • Co-listed 400-level courses between ME and MSE (if offered) may be counted as either ME or MSE but not both
  • One or two units of MECH_ENG 499-0 Projectsor MAT_SCI 499-0 Projects
    • Each unit will have a primary adviser in ME or MSE, and a co-adviser in the other department. The final grade is reached in agreement between the co-advisers.
    • If two units of 499 are taken, the second unit should be a separate project with different advisors
  • Three or two additional graduate-level courses in McCormick
    • Flexibility in course selection enables, for example, Minor in Engineering Management or Scientific Computing
