BSED/BSJ in Education and Social Policy and in Journalism

BSED/BSJ Course Requirements

The dual degree program in education and social policy and journalism offers students the opportunity to earn a bachelor of science in education and social policy and a bachelor of science in journalism in five years, allowing students the unique opportunity to pursue two academic programs in preparation to understand and demonstrate the principles and practices of journalism and media in the context of education and social policy.  Students develop their passion for media as a tool for creating change in learning environments, human relationships, organizations, and the field of social policy.  The program capitalizes on the strengths of both schools and allows students combine writing with their desire to improve the world. Students may select any of SESP’s undergraduate majors.

Dual degree students must complete all requirements for both degrees (see the double counting allowances in the chart below) and the Undergraduate Registration Requirement. Each school enforces all of its policies regarding requirements.

Current students interested in pursuing the dual degree in journalism and education and social policy should contact Medill Academic Advising and the SESP Student Affairs Office.

Complementary courses (4 units)
Students will work with their advisors to select 4 units of complementary classes. For example, a dual degree student who selects the JR route for their experiential education requirement would work with their advisor to balance that experience with additional SESP coursework. A student who selects the Practicum route for their experiential education requirement will work with their advisor to balance that experience with additional Medill coursework.
Credit for Dual Degree Experiential Education is a total of 4 credit hours, split up with 3 for JR/Practicum/Student Teaching and 1 for Dual Degree Community Workshop participation (non-graded).
*

Students may not complete this requirement with a pre-approved noncredit professional experience. Requirements for the professional experience/internship option include 4 courses, 3 of which must be 300-level journalism courses.

**

If the student is an Elementary or Secondary Teaching major, they must select Student Teaching to fulfill their Experiential Education requirement.
